Natasha Dolezal, J.D.

Natasha Dolezal, J.D., directs the International Animal Law program at the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) at Lewis & Clark Law School. She is responsible for building capacity in animal law, advocacy, and legal education around the world. She speaks to diverse audiences about animal law legal education and animal law issues in countries around the world such as Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Rwanda, and China. Through the innovative micro grant program, she also develops and helps support country specific initiatives focussed on animal law legal education and animal welfare/protection issues in collaboration with international animal law LL.M. graduates. Most recently, she organized the first conference on animal law, the Africa Animal Law Convention, held in Nairobi (September 2018) which featured presentations from African graduates of the LL.M. program and was attended by local law students, faculty, veterinarians, prosecutors and advocates.

Ms. Dolezal started at CALS as the first director of the world’s only Animal Law LL.M. program and also directed the Kenya Legal Project. Prior to joining CALS, she was involved in the passage of Oregon’s first law protecting farm animals, in addition to legislation recognizing the link between animal abuse and child abuse as well as Oregon’s successful ballot measure addressing wildlife trafficking in endangered and threatened species. She also prosecuted felony and misdemeanor crimes, including animal abuse cases, as a deputy district attorney in Oregon for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
